9 Jacket Styles to Cozy Up In this Fall

We’ve been in Colorado over the weekend, and the cooler weather, foliage, and hearty meals have been so invigorating, but it’s an especially nice feeling to be able to wear clothes for cooler fall weather, like some of my favorite fall jackets. As we ease into the season, adding a lightweight fall jacket is one of the best purchases you can make.

I picked up this cozy reversible sherpa jacket from Amazon, but I also have my eye on this one, this one, and this one. There are dozens of lightweight fall jacket styles to choose from, but the right one(s) for you will depend on where you live, whether you enjoy dressy or casual styles, and the “holes” in your current wardrobe.

To help you in your hunt, I’m sharing recommendations for the 9 best types of lightweight fall jackets. I hope you find something you love!

1. Sherpa Coat

This casual style feels just as cozy as it looks, making it perfect for quintessential fall activities like the pumpkin patch, breweries, chili cookoffs, and bonfires with friends. For errands, layer a half-zip jacket style, like this cropped sherpa from Alo Yoga, over leggings with sneakers.

I like to pair my reversible sherpa (pictured) with a long sleeve white t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers for everyday wear. If fall is abbreviated where you live, consider an option that easily transitions from fall to winter, like a thicker teddy bear coat. I’ve seen several pretty styles this season at Shopbop, and I also love this teddy jacket.

2. Denim Jacket

Tie it at the waist, layer it over a sweater, throw it over your favorite sweater dress with ankle booties—you really can’t go wrong with a jean jacket, especially for fall days earlier in the season. If you’re looking for a value jean jacket, I recommend the Madewell one. It’s a crowd favorite and has a classic look for less than $125. Levi’s also makes great denim trucker jackets, but they’re less tailored. For an investment option, I recommend denim jackets by L’agence or FRAME.

3. Blazer

If forced to choose, I’d probably say that blazers are my favorite type of fall outerwear. A plaid blazer, in particular, is a timeless staple in a fall wardrobe. These days, they come in fitted, box cut, short and long styles, all of which are reliably chic and comfortable when styled well.

I like to wear them over a fitted t-shirt with straight-leg denim and sneakers, but they work just as well dressed up with heels and an evening bag. This slightly oversized option by Everlane was included in my Fall 2020 Capsule Wardrobe, and I bought this heavier wool blazer from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year.

4. Suede or Faux Leather Moto Jacket

This is admittedly my least-worn fall jacket style, but if you enjoy edgier fashion, this is my pick for you. While bomber jackets and other modern takes may go out of style, leather jackets and biker styles have been around for years. I’ve seen many fashion bloggers layer their classic biker jackets with a t-shirt and sneakers or skinny jeans and heels. I like to wear my BlankNYC suede moto jacket over a dress to add a taste of edge and warmth to an otherwise feminine outfit.

5. Trench Coat

If you’re looking for a fall jacket that can be worn in other seasons, I recommend a trench coat. Easy to dress up or down, you can pull a classic double-breasted style, like this best seller that’s in my closet, right back out once spring arrives. I prefer trench coats to raincoats, windbreakers, and heavier anoraks because I find them more stylish, but if it’s especially rainy in your locale, be sure to check the product details for “water-resistant” or “water repellent” descriptions. See my picks for the best trench coats of 2020 here.

6. Utility Jacket

If I had to describe utility jackets in two words, I’d say they’re functional and versatile. This is my fall layer of choice for throwing on to run errands, grab a coffee—you name it. To make a utility jacket go even further in your closet, I recommend choosing an option that isn’t deep military green, which is the traditional color for this style.

Madewell and J.Crew make cute lightweight jackets, and I’ve also seen affordable brands like Mango, Zara and And Other Stories release nice utility jackets or button-down shirt jackets for women. I picked up this one during Amazon Prime Day.

7. Faux Fur Jacket

I’ve been adding more faux fur jackets to my closet over the past few years because I absolutely love how comfy they feel. It’s practically like wearing a blanket, and most options can be worn well into winter. Go for a hoodie style for a casual look or opt for a tailored faux fur jacket for nicer outings.

My favorite brands for affordable faux fur jackets are AQUA and BlankNYC. For mid-range options, Apparis makes beautiful faux fur coats in various colors and lengths. For an investment faux fur jacket, take a look at Vince.

8. Quilted Jacket

A quilted jacket is an all-weather option, adding warmth and aesthetic appeal without the heaviness of a peacoat or puffer coat. North Face and Patagonia make nice outdoorsy styles, but I prefer tailored quilted jackets, like this one by Everlane (also comes cropped).

Eileen Fisher makes elevated styles like this one, and Barbour’s iconic drawstring coats are gorgeous.  My investment pick is this classic Burberry barn jacket, which has a corduroy collar, thermoregulating technology, and vintage-check lining.

9. Wool Blend Coat

I look forward to layering a wool coat over my fall fashion looks every single year. Though this style is best for late fall into winter, it works with practically any outfit (given that one you select is long enough). Layer a cozy wrap coat over a maxi dress with booties, or tie it around your go-to sweater + jeans + booties combination.

The wrap coat I picked for this year’s Fall Capsule Wardrobe is soft, medium-weight, and lays beautifully. I’ve been eyeing this investment option from Vince, and this Theory draped jacket sells out annually.

Which Fall Jacket is Right for You?

There you have it! The nine best fall jackets for women to consider, with a few of my favorites from this season. If you’re still having trouble deciding between the outerwear styles, try narrowing down by weather and activity. Continue reading below for my take on how to choose between the nine the best fall coats and jackets women can buy:

  • If you live in a climate where winter arrives sooner, a wool coat or faux fur jacket will keep you cozy as the temperatures drop.
  • Women in warmer climates can do well with a denim jacket, utility jacket, or trench coat through early November in some spots.
  • If you enjoy outdoorsy activities and casual style, I recommend a lightweight sherpa (shop mine here) or a casual quilted parka.
  • If you like to dress up or work in a setting with professional dress, a wool wrap coat or classic trench coat will go further for your fall wardrobe.
  • If you have room in your budget for just one fall jacket, try something that can be dressed up or down. Quilted jackets tend to have this quality as do lightweight twill and camel coats with a fit that falls above the knees and below the waist.
