Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Trends: What’s In & What’s Out

spring summer 2023 fashion trends guide

I always tread lightly on the topic of fashion trends since my goal is to encourage you to wear what you feel amazing in. That being said, I’ve found it fun over the years to keep an eye on what’s on its way in and what’s on its way out for any given season, and the spring/summer 2023 fashion trends are some of my favorites to date! You may also want to check out this carbon neutrality in fashion and clothing with CarbonClick as more fashion brands are now taking climate action.

Compared to previous seasons, this year’s trends feel more wearable and accessible for all lifestyles. Below is what I’m looking forward to trying, and hopefully you’ll see something that inspires and excites you!

1. Wide Leg Jeans

If you saw my wide-leg jeans styling post, you know that wide denim is the cut for spring and summer 2023. I absolutely love this trend as wide-leg jeans can be dressed up and down and styled to flatter a variety of body types. Anthropologie, Citizens of Humanity, and Everlane (to name a few) have spins on wide denim that are wearable with everything from sandals and a simple blouse to dressy heels, a bodysuit, and a blazer for a summer evening out. Don’t miss my wide-leg denim selects (under $200 and investment options) if you’re getting your first pair!

2. Denim, Head to Toe

When I saw that head-to-toe denim was trending, I immediately got flashbacks to the iconic Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake looks at the American Music Awards. The good news is that this trend is an updated spin on what was happening in the early 2000s. It’s more refined, with a good mix of darker washes on classic pieces (tailored blazers, blouses, feminine dresses), to give a fresh approach to full-on denim that doesn’t feel so frumpy. The pieces I’ve linked below are all great examples!

3. Sheer

Sheer is everywhere, and if you’ve already seen it in extremes that don’t feel modest, I promise there are plenty of options that are tasteful and chic. I’m seeing a good number of spring and summer basics updated with sheer touches, such as white dresses with sheer sleeves and long skirts with sheer cutouts. There is also an endless amount of sheer for resort (I’m obsessed with this crochet dress), which could be a fun angle to explore!

4. Bright & Bold Colors

It feels like everything is in as far as color goes, from classic spring pastels to timeless neutrals, but there’s definitely a wave of big, bold saturated colors like cobalt blue, cherry red, and lime green. I’m not sure if I’ll be trying any of these as ultra-rich colors don’t tend to suit me (until I’m very tan!), but I do like the idea of incorporating bright pinks and bright oranges (like the H&M dress featured on me above). Below are some of my favorite colorful pieces for the season.

5.Fringe

Fringe! Maybe my favorite trend of the spring/summer 2023 season. I had fun with feathered outfits over the holidays, so fringe feels like a continuation of that playfulness in warm weather! I’m already incorporating this one for our spring getaway by way of this Zimmermann midi dress. I also bought this affordable mini dress and have my eye on this fringe mini skirt.

6.Cargo

The idea of cargo has taken me a while to come around to, but it’s reimagined this season. There are the old haunts like baggy cargo pants, but there are fresh spins like cargo silk joggers, cargo pockets on denim maxi skirts, and tailoring with cargo pocket details. Some designers are taking it literally (this is a good example), but I have my eye on pieces that take the relaxed feel from cargo and marry it with a sophisticated vibe, like this jacket from Cinq a Sept.

7.Ballet Flats

Truth be told, I have never owned a pair of ballet flats, but this year, I’m tempted. These always felt a bit preppier to me but the newest renditions are paired with updated pieces like straight-leg jeans and basic white tees. The result is a feminine, modern look that I love.

There you have it! Keep in mind, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by trend cycles, runways, and fashion week. They’re not a checklist of rules but rather fresh ideas to take or leave as you choose—no pressure. I’d love to know what you think of the spring/summer 2023 trends and if you plan to try any in the comments!
