Tailored shorts are one style I naturally have a bias toward when it comes to summer bottoms. As much as I love denim shorts, they’re notoriously difficult to shop for and often require more effort upfront to achieve the perfect length and fit. Not to mention, I’ve found non-denim shorts to be more versatile, flattering, and comfortable across the board!
While tailored shorts tend to be more costly (though there are great budget options, which I dive into below), it’s well worth it when it comes time to put together polished warm weather looks.
Below are three ways to style tailored shorts and a roundup of styles to shop.
How to Style Tailored Shorts
The beauty of tailored shorts is that they bring a refined feel to any outfit, which makes them inherently easy to style with both casual and dressy separates alike. Here are a few ideas featuring this Zimmermann pair (also available here and here) I picked up this season.
Casual: Tank and Sandals
For a casual look or vacation, I love to pair mine with a simple white tank top or t-shirt, slides or sandals, and a tote. Any casual tee or tank can work, but I like to reach for tops that have elevated fabrication. This scoopneck tank with rib detailing is a great example!
Dressy: Blouse and Heels
For evenings, date night, or a special event, pair a solid tailored short with a floral blouse and heels (or vice versa; floral shorts with a coordinating solid blouse). A full tuck of the blouse adds polish and will highlight the waist. Finish the look with simple jewelry and a clutch or shoulder bag.
Paired: Blazer and Shorts Set
Many designers offer shorts with a matching blazer (here’s the blazer for my shorts), which is perfect for leaning into the tailoring trend and can work for special events, date nights, and maybe business casual settings, depending on the dress code. Brands make this easy by offering their blazers and shorts as coord sets. A few favorite places to shop for these are highlighted below!

Budget-Friendly Options
Dressy shorts are definitely available on a budget. Target’s high-waisted shorts are a best seller this year, though I haven’t tried them. Brands to check out in the under $200 price range are Abercrombie, Everlane, Z Supply, and Madewell.
Designer Favorites
I usually go the pricier route on tailored shorts for a few reasons. Contemporary brands tend to nail fit and the fabrics are usually higher percentages of twill, linen blends, and crepe, which helps the shorts appear refined and encourages durability. A few favorite brands are Zimmermann, Veronica Beard, A.L.C., and Cinq a Sept.
