Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2020

fall-capsule-wardrobe-2020

My fall capsule wardrobe is here! This fall capsule wardrobe focuses on 12 new pieces that can be mixed and matched to create looks for home and safe outings that become available to you as your state moves through the phases of lockdown. I’ve also linked budget-friendly and investment styles for certain fall capsule wardrobe items below.

This might surprise you, but I’m looking forward to fall this year more than ever. While many of the social aspects of autumn (football games, tailgating, chili cook-offs, etc.) will either remain impossibilities or look very different, quarantine creates the perfect opportunity to capitalize on the coziness of the season.

Basically, this fall is an open invitation to truly enjoy your house and hometown. I personally can’t wait to watch the foliage change in our backyard, infuse the house with cinnamon and cloves, cuddle up to watch a scary movie, and sip a homemade pumpkin latte. Happy fall!

The Fall Capsule Wardrobe: A Note About Each Piece

CAMEL COAT

Oh man, where to even start with this camel coat—it checks so many boxes. The wrap style makes it easy to dress down (think sneakers and jeans) while the notched lapel and midi length make it 100% appropriate for dressy looks. It’s tailored to avoid an overly boxy fit and comes in gray. This Nordstrom Ralph Lauren wool coat is my investment choice. If fall isn’t cold enough for a camel coat where you live, swap in a classic trench coat or this cardigan blazer. If sold out, find similar here.

BLAZER

I chose a blazer over a faux leather jacket, moto jacket, or denim jacket because I honestly love this Everlane piece so much that I had to share. It’s perfectly oversized (as in it won’t swallow you). The windowpane plaid print weaves brown and black, so you can wear it with fall outfit combinations in both tones. Also love this budget-friendly jacket and this investment plaid blazer.

CARDIGAN

If you only get one outerwear piece from this fall capsule, it should be this J.Crew cardigan blazer. It was one of my top purchases from 2019 and goes with everything. The weight is between a coat and a thin cardigan, the cuffs are ribbed, the lapel is notched, the pockets are functional…I could go on and on. They brought it back this year in four neutral colors. Size down if in between sizes. Also love this affordable alternative. This investment pick from Vince (my all-time favorite for knitwear).

CASHMERE SWEATER

I love fall sweaters and realistically have more than a cashmere crewneck. For a fall capsule though, I decided to go with something that can work in many ways. This sweater takes minimalism one notch up by adding blouson sleeves. You’ll get more wear out of a basic layering sweater than you would out of a button down, turtleneck, or cotton long sleeve tee. Trust me! I also have this style in oatmeal and love the v-neck in loden (olive green).

SILK SLIP DRESS

This is a gorgeous piece that can be worn several ways and through all four seasons. Layer a sweater over it this fall or pair it with a blazer and boots. The options are endless, and Cuyana delivers every time with regard to quality. See one way I styled it here.

SWEATER DRESS

I’m 5’9” and really struggle to find sweater dresses that aren’t too revealing or short. This dress is the perfect length, has a looser fit (belt it to add shape), and is so soft. My favorite way to style this one is with knee-high boots, but it could work for a casual outing with sneakers. Similar option under $100 here.

WASHABLE SILK SHIRT

This washable (yes, washable!) silk shirt has a beautiful drape and is super soft. More feminine than your basic tee or short sleeve t-shirt and prettier than your average chambray shirt, this beauty runs large and can be worn with leggings, tucked into jeans or a skirt, and with chunky sweaters. I love the muted green and tan colors in particular.

DENIM

The perfect jeans for fall should be comfortable, flattering, and easily wearable with all shoe styles, and these are SO good for all of the above. The dark wash makes them easy to dress up and they’re a true skinny jean, meaning they’ll tuck neatly into knee-high boots and OTK boots. If skinnies aren’t your style, this Madewell pair has a wider leg opening. Also love this high-rise Everlane pair under $100.

LOAFER MULES

Great neutral loafers are to fall what your favorite slide sandals are to summer. They work with just about everything and keep you comfortable yet styled. I like the gold hardware bit detail on these Sam Edelman mule loafers. These croc loafers are really fun if you’re a little more daring, and the Gucci Brixton horsebit loafers are my investment pick.

KNEE HIGH BOOTS

I wanted to include leather boots because a) they’re classic and b) they go with practically everything. I am swooning over the color of these Schutz boots (more options here if sold out). The pointed toe elongates the legs, and even though they have a slight western flare, it’s not overwhelmingly trendy. Here’s a suede option with less of a western vibe. My investment leather boot pick is here (I own and can testify to the quality—they are timeless).

ANKLE BOOTIES

I have this pair in Cloud Suede and Brown and they are comfortable enough to be worn ALL day. The heel is just right; it adds enough height to be flattering but not so much that you’re uncomfortable. The shaft also works with a wide variety of jean styles. If you like a shorter, Chelsea-style bootie, I recommend the Rag & Bone Walkers. I have them in black and the camel are on my wish list because they’re that good.

TOTE OR CROSSBODY BAG

Handbags are one of those items that I find truly worth the extra dollars when it comes to style, quality, and durability, so here are two versatile investment options for your fall wardrobe. The Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag is roomier and a perfect middle-of-the-road color palette for different outfits. The A.P.C. Demi Lune Crossbody is smaller but should fit your wallet, phone, and keys, and the leather is gorgeous. More classic fall bag options here.
