I’ve always found spring to be the hardest season to dress for. The weather is so unpredictable, with afternoon storms and pure sunshine often happening in the same week!
One of the easiest ways to make sure your closet is prepared for the season is to have a list of spring wardrobe essentials. Once you know that your basics, like short sleeve t-shirts, lightweight jackets, and white sneakers, are in order, you can start to work in any spring trends that resonate with you.
If you’re not sure where to start with your spring outfits or need to update your spring wardrobe staples, these are the top 10 spring essentials I think every woman should have in her closet.
Spring Wardrobe Essentials
1. Short Sleeve T-Shirt
A classic white t-shirt is a go-to piece for all seasons. The feel, fit, and quality of this short sleeve white tee can’t be beat, but if you’re not ready to invest, I recommend this white shirt under $50. More options, including tank tops for those of you in very warm climates, below.
2. Lightweight Jacket
A trench coat is my most-used spring outerwear in spring—one can easily be thrown over leggings or a full outfit and tie the look together. The right lightweight jacket for you will really depend on your style preferences and local climate. I have a denim jacket, utility jacket, blazers, and a leather jacket, all of which are handy for different reasons in springtime.
3. White Sneakers
It’s ironic to me that sneakers have become so trendy over the past year because a pair of crisp, clean white sneakers have always felt in style; they go with literally everything in spring. I love this minimalist, non-branded pair, and I also own several pairs of Vejas (most worn pair here). This under $100 pair is also cute and not too chunky. More options below.
4. Light Wash Jeans
Come March, I shift away from black jeans and skinny jean styles to white jeans, lighter washes, and primarily straight-leg and cropped jeans styles. These high-rise, wide-leg jeans are by far the favorite pair of white jeans in my closet (major splurge). I just bought this pair of jeans for casual looks (love the wash). If you’re looking for an affordable pair of jeans or pants for the season, I recommend Madewell, Everlane, and Levi’s. If it’s already hot where you are, these are my favorite denim shorts.
5. Warm Weather Blouse
One of my go-to looks year-round is a statement blouse and simple jeans, so it’s no surprise that one of my spring wardrobe essentials is a beautiful blouse. Go simple with a white button down, keep things smooth and comfy with a bodysuit, or go feminine with ruffles and smocking.
6. Maxi Dress or Midi Dress
Whether relaxing around the house, headed out to date night, or taking a walk on the beach on vacation, a spring dress is an ebay throw-on piece for styling with sandals or sneakers and a jean jacket. I love this floral print dress, this simple white t-shirt dress, and this floral dress. More options below.
7. Spring Sweater or Cardigan
By now, my wool and cashmere sweaters are tucked away in storage, but I still need something lightweight for cool mornings and evenings. A v-neck cardigan is perfect for layering over a tee (and can even replace a lightweight jacket). Another favorite spring outfit combination of mine is a long sleeve pullover, cropped jeans, and mules.
I know that not everyone’s into jumpsuits, but for me, they’re a spring essential. I personally find them so cute and comfortable, so I like to have a few styles in my closet for the new season. This is a darling casual sleeveless option from Amazon, and I love this animal print style as a coverup. More options below.
Whether it’s too cool to wear sandals or you’re tired of wearing ankle booties, warmer weather, closed-toe shoes are essential for navigating spring dressing. These loafer mules are my top investment pick, but there are dozens of options from retailers like Nordstrom and Bloomingdales under $100. See a few I’ve handpicked below.
10. Neutral Handbag
Woven, neutral, textural pieces are to spring what velvet, sequins, and festive colors are to winter. Since I already did a big spring handbag roundup, I won’t go into detail here. However, for a bag you can pair with all your spring outfits, I recommend opting for a neutral, woven tote or crossbody bag.
There were so many pieces I love and was tempted to add to this list, like a midi skirt, joggers, and a feminine hoodie, but these are the 10 I’ve narrowed it down to. You can fill in your own spring capsule wardrobe with fashion trends that add some versatility and align with your personal style, but these ten should provide a great foundation for your spring wardrobe.
