Since I purchased my Dyson Airwrap I’ve shared about it a handful of times (first a review, then to compare it to the Dyson hair dryer, then to review the long barrel attachments).
I receive so many questions asking for help deciding if the Airwrap is a worthwhile investment for you, and some of the most common ones have to do with attachments—how they work, what each does, etc., so I figured it was time for a dedicated Dyson Airwrap attachments guide!
Below I put together an overview that touches on which attachments the Airwrap comes with, what each does, and which I use most often.
New Dyson Attachments in 2022
A quick note: the Dyson Airwrap 2.0 launched in June 2022 with fresh attachments. They look similar to the first version with a few minor tweaks that I’ll cover. The good news is that the new attachments will fit the 1.0 version!
The best news? The Airwrap is now sold with long barrels (previously these had to be purchased separately). I highly, highly recommend the long barrel version vs. the standard. You can read more about why they make such a difference here.
Dyson Airwrap Attachments Overview
Okay, let’s break down these attachments! The Dyson Airwrap comes with six attachments, which vary a bit depending on whether you get the long, original, or curly version. For example, the curly version comes with a wide-tooth comb designed for coily hair.
Below, I’m covering the attachments that come with the original. That’s what’s typically sold in stores like Ulta and Sephora (and is easiest to find in stock).
Coanda Smoothing Dryer
The original Airwrap came with a pre-styling dryer attachment (pictured above in my set) that was used to get the hair ready to style by taking it from wet to damp.
This was replaced in June 2022 by the Coanda smoothing dryer attachment in the AIrwrap 2.0, which has two modes: drying and smoothing. The drying mode works just like the original pre-drying styler, but the smoothing mode uses the coanda effect on dry hair to hide flyaways and to smooth.
Curl and Wave Attachments
The Airwrap Styler Complete comes with two sets of barrels: 1.2” and 1.6”. It also comes with a round volumizing brush.
1.6” Airwrap Barrels
These create large, bouncy, loose curls or waves. Think vintage waves and hollywood waves. I like to use these when I don’t want a defined curl. They’re also my favorite when I’m in a rush or touching up hair from the day before (they can pick up large sections).
1.2” Airwrap Barrels
For tighter curls and waves. Think Shirley Temple. You’re forced to work in smaller sections with these barrels, so I find that the curls last a little longer since the direct heat reaches more of each strand.
Round Volumizing Brush
The round volumizing brush adds body and shape to the hair dries. It’s great for a classic blowout with volume at the root and a curl in at the ends. I use this brush the least often because I’ve found it can cause a tiny bit of breakage and frizz around the crown (the bristles are fairly tough and I have very fine hair).
Smooth and Volumize Attachments
The Airwrap comes with two smoothing brushes: firm and soft. Truth be told, I can’t really tell the difference between them, so I use them interchangeably.
Firm Smoothing Brush
According to Dyson, the firm smoothing brush has firmer bristles that are designed to smooth and detangle frizz-prone hair. I think if you have very curly hair you’ll benefit from this one.
Soft Smoothing Brush
The soft smoothing brush smooths and straightens finer hair and is gentler. If you have delicate, color-treated, or fine hair, you may naturally reach for this one more.
How to Store Dyson Airwrap Attachments
One of the only drawbacks of the Airwrap is that with all the pieces—base, attachments, case—it’s hard to store.
For the moment, I store everything in the case that comes with the Airwrap under my vanity.
However, I’ve been thinking about a countertop solution. Dyson offers stands but there are stands and wall mounts available on Amazon as well.
How to Clean Dyson Airwrap Attachments
The barrels and brushes are so low maintenance that I probably only clean mine once every month.
To clean the Dyson Airwrap attachments, I remove hair from the brushes with my hands and then wipe them down with a lightly damp cloth.
How to Change the Attachments
This is a question I get often from people who’ve never used the Dyson Airwrap before and are wondering how the tool works. It’s so easy!
To change an attachment:
- If an attachment is in the Airwrap, pull down on the switch on the main body to release it
- Slide the attachment out
- To change to another attachment, just pop it into the top of the main body
- Turn until the attachment fits securely
- When you hear a click, it’s all set to use
If there’s anything I didn’t cover about the Airwrap attachments, please feel free to leave a comment or send me a message on Instagram! I love chatting hair care with you, especially since this is one of the most expensive styling tools on the market. I know that it helps to feel confident in your purchase before you take the plunge!
I also reviewed the Dyson Corrale straightener and the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, in case you’re curious about the other Dyson hair tools.
I’ve been searching for a comprehensive guide on Dyson Airwrap attachments and this post is a game-changer! Thank you for breaking down each attachment and its purpose, it’s so helpful to understand how to get the most out of my device
I’m so glad to hear that! It really is the best once you learn how to use it.
