Maxi skirts are trending this fall, but even if they weren’t, I’d still get excited to style them for chilly weather. No matter the season, full-length skirts add an elegant yet easygoing feel, not to mention they travel well and can be dressed up and down.
I stumbled on the cutest boutique in Del Mar on our recent trip to San Diego (Tucci is a must visit if you’re ever in the area!) and found this moody skirt by Apiece Apart. The print, olive color, side slit—everything about it spoke to me.
When looking for a top to pair with a maxi skirt, I find it crucial to maintain a waistline, so that usually leads me to simple fitted tops or blouses that are “tuckable,” like the FRAME top I wore in this look.
As for the shoes, technically any closed toe works (sneakers, knee-high boots, mules), but details that nod to fall, like suede, leather, or a seasonal color, will help the outfit feel cohesive.

How to Wear a Maxi Skirt in the Fall
Most women associate long skirts with dressy, polished outfits, but they can be styled casually as well. This is easier for certain types (tulle and leather lean dressy while cotton leans casual), but even luxe fabrics can feel casual paired back to a simple top and sneakers.
These are some of my favorite fall maxi skirt outfits for everything from weekday errands to a night out, the office, and special fall gatherings.
Fall Maxi Outfit Ideas
Casual
I love dressing down a satin maxi with a cozy knit and sneakers. You could invert the textures here and wear a knit maxi like this with a silk blouse, too.
Dressy Transitional
When it’s still warm out you can style a lightweight knit maxi with a simple fitted tank and heels for an evening out. Reach for a blazer if you need that extra layer for the A/C; knee-high boots will transition this look for colder fall days.
Layered Up
Once it’s properly cold, I like to style my fall blazers like a top and wear them buttoned. I love wearing tops with unique necklines (like the collar on the blouse below) for a statement, but a simple layering t-shirt or camisole would work underneath as well. Complete the look with knee high boots and a seasonal tote.
Date Night/Special Occasion
I know it’s early, but I’m already scheming about my Thanksgiving outfit and this is high on the list of possibilities. A satin maxi with an elevated sweater tucked in, coordinating boots, and a blazer thrown over the shoulders is a chic departure from your typical fall dress for nicer occasions.
