When summer temperatures get sky high, shorts move to the forefront of all our wardrobes. Finding the right pair can require a little more effort up front (and possibly a visit to the tailor), but it’s worth it when it comes to putting together easy, polished summer shorts outfits.
There’s a whole world of options to explore, from drapey high-waisted styles to splashy printed pairs, while, of course, denim cutoffs will always be a favorite.
Today I’m sharing summer outfits with shorts to encourage you to get creative when styling them! Whether you lean casual or love a sophisticated touch like me, see below for cute summer shorts outfit ideas to inspire your own.
Summer Shorts Outfits
Blue Jean Cutoffs
Jean shorts are a summer must have for casual settings. I love to style my cutoffs over swimsuits, with a tank top, and with a white button down. This is my favorite pair—the long inseam makes them way more wearable than ultra-short styles.
White Denim Cutoffs
These are the same denim cutoffs in white. It pays to have a lighter pair to mix and match when you want a softer, neutral aesthetic, like with a summer blouse.
Tailored Denim Shorts
When I’m not wearing a dress but want to feel put together, you’ll find me in tailored shorts. They can be dressed down with a simple tee or elevated with a belt, heels, and a blouse. The barely there a-line on this pair is insanely flattering. I also love this slightly dressier pair.
Chino Shorts
Chino shorts are made from breathable cotton, so they’re perfect for warm weather. J.Crew has been the go-to for these for years, but this season I had luck with one of my favorite brands, VINCE. This pair adds polish with on-seam pockets and a hidden zip closure.
Dressy Shorts
When jean shorts aren’t cutting it, a pair with dressier fabrication in a neutral that will fit seamlessly into your summer wardrobe is a must. These A.L.C. shorts are so luxe and look good with everything. I sized down two sizes. In the second picture I’m wearing cuffed pink shorts by Ted Baker.
Tie-Waist Shorts
Everyone needs a pair of casual pull-on shorts for summer. This tie-waisted pair by Reiss is my pick for the season. I love them so much that I got them in three colors! They’re breathable, flattering, and hold up well in the wash.
Paper Bag Shorts
Paper bag shorts can be tricky as most give the illusion of bulk. Leave it to Ulla Johnson to make the perfect pair that has all the room and breathability of the style without the extra fabric. These drape beautifully and the print looks amazing with a wide variety of neutral blouses and crop tops. I wore mine on vacation this spring.
Printed Shorts
Perhaps not the most versatile but definitely the most fun is a print. I have loved incorporating pattern and wear these more than I anticipated! They’re easy to style—just grab a neutral blouse and accessories in a coordinating color for a mood-boosting summer shorts outfit.
