Dyson Supersonic vs. Dyson Airwrap: Which Is Better?
The Dyson Supersonic and the Dyson Airwrap are both amazing styling tools. I can speak to the quality and effectiveness of both, but they have their differences.
If you’re not familiar with these tools, here’s a primer:
- The Dyson Airwrap comes with multiple attachments that use the “coanda effect” to dry and style hair simultaneously.
- The Dyson Supersonic is a hair dryer engineered to prevent damage and increase smoothness and shine.
Here’s who I think should get each one.
Who Should Buy the Dyson Hair Dryer?

Dyson Hair Dryer vs. Airwrap Results Side by Side
Below are video and photo comparisons of how my hair looks when I use the Airwrap vs. the Supersonic.
Video Comparison
In the video below, I styled one side with the Airwrap and the other side with the hair dryer followed by a T3 curling iron. The Airwrap side has bouncy, voluminous, “classic” curls. The Supersonic side has sleeker, beachy waves.
Photo Comparison
In the left photo below, my hair was dried with the Supersonic Hair Dryer then curled with a curling iron.
In the right photo below, my hair was curled with the Airwrap.

Construction and How They Work
Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Construction + How I Use It
Dyson Supersonic Construction
An homage to Dyson’s best-selling fans, the supersonic has a hole at its center and a motor that is smaller, lighter, and quieter than that of traditional hair dryers.
This makes it extremely easy to hold, and your shoulders won’t burn at all in the process (it weighs less than one pound).
The dryer has three buttons on its head behind the noddle: an on/off switch, heat settings, and airflow settings. They’re all easy to reach with one thumb. The cord is extra long, which is convenient if you don’t have an outlet nearby for your blow-dry sesh.
It comes with three magnetic attachments: two nozzles and one diffuser. Dyson also sells other attachments, like a wide tooth comb, separately.
How I Use My Dyson Hair Dryer
I typically use my Supersonic to dry and smooth my hair when I know I’m going to curl it with my T3 curler or a flat iron after:
- I start by giving all of my hair a rough dry, using the dryer on its own at high speed without an attachment.
- Then, I’ll section my hair with a claw clip (top and bottom) and dry my hair in 2-4” sections with the smoothing nozzle attachment.
- I use this round brush or a similar volumizing brush to pull the hair away from my head and curl it under at the ends.
I can usually have my hair dried within under 15 minutes, which is HUGE. In the past, it took me 30-60 minutes.
How I Use the Dyson Airwrap Construction + How I Use It
Dyson Airwrap Construction
The Dyson Airwrap is a styling dryer that includes 8 removable attachments that style and dry your hair at the same time. It’s compact and the attachments are the main point. The Airwrap Complete comes with two sets of barrels to curl or wave, two brushes to smooth and volumize, and a pre-drying styler.
It uses the Coanda effect, an aerodynamic phenomenon that curves air to attract and wrap hair around the barrels. Styling is a little more time-intensive, as you’ll need to use a different barrel for each side of your head (for clockwise and counter-clockwise curls).
To add an attachment, place it on top of the base and twist until you hear a click. To change attachments, move the lock/unlock button on the base to the unlock position. The base has three buttons: a power button with a cool shot built-in, a speed button, and a heat button.
How I Use My Dyson Airwrap
There are dozens of ways to use the Airwrap, which is one of the areas where it shines. For brevity’s sake, I’m going to describe how I use it most often.
If I want a smooth, straight blowout:
- I’ll add the smoothing brush attachment and dry my hair as I sip my morning cup of coffee.
That’s it! Truly. It’s my favorite way to use the Airwrap. It acts as a drying brush. I LOVE this attachment, and it’s definitely my most used.
When I want bouncy curls:
- I start by drying my hair until it’s damp with the pre-styling dryer.
- Then, section my hair into two (top and bottom) with a claw clip.
- Using the right barrels, I take 1-2” sections of hair and allow the Airwrap to grab them.
- I pull the bottom inch of hair out so that I get a beachy wave.
- I release the top section of hair and repeat.
- I pull up and out around my face with the barrels to get extra volume.
- Brush through at the end.
Pricing
It’s no secret that both hair tools are expensive.
As of March 2023, the Dyson Supersonic retails for $429, and the Dyson Airwrap Complete and Dyson Airwrap Complete Long retail for $599.
Dyson Hair Dryer vs. Dyson Airwrap Performance Comparison
As you can see in the chart, the Supersonic wins on frizz, speed, storage, and ease of use. The Airwrap wins on versatility. They are equals in heat protection.
Don’t let this chart fool you, though. I love my Airwrap, it just isn’t as easy to use for everyday styling.
Dyson Hair Dryer vs. Dyson Airwrap FAQs
Where can I find them on sale?
You can find refurbished Airwraps and Hair Dryers like new on eBay. I recommend purchasing through the Dyson Refurbished program or ensuring the item has an eBay Money Back Guarantee certificate.
Can the Dyson Airwrap be used as a hair dryer?
Yes, the pre-styling dryer attachment and the smoothing brushes can be used to dry the hair. The pre-styling dryer’s nozzle is not as large as the hair dryer nozzles, however, so it may take more time. The smoothing brushes dry just as fast and possibly smoother than the Dyson Hair Dryer.
Should I buy the Dyson Airwrap or the Dyson Hair Dryer?
I personally would take the Dyson Hair Dryer to a desert island, if I had to choose. I recommend the Dyson Supersonic for almost anyone, while the Airwrap is best for a smaller subset of people.
What hair types do the Airwrap and the Supersonic work best for?
The Supersonic works with all hair types. The Airwrap works best with people who do not have thick, coarse, textured hair.
I loved your review. Thank you. Well written and appreciated.
Wow, thank you so much Salegha! I so appreciate you taking the time to comment and say that. It means the world to me! Thank you for visiting, and I hope you’ll follow along! Warmly, Natalie
Okay. I need a new dryer and am ready to invest in a Dyson. My current dryer is an Elchim and has finally worn out after many years. I have baby fine, aging hair currently in a short Bob with bangs. My biggest hair challenge is frizz and lack of volume. The air wrap with smoothing brush sounds like the perfect solution but I am unlikely to use the other attachments. But who knows? I am willing to make whatever investment I need to to get the easiest, best tool that will last for years and also travel well. The Revlon and Dry Bar alternatives look to big around for my short hair. Which Dyson tool would you recommend for me?
Hi! So glad you asked! If budget is not an issue, I think you will absolutely love the Airwrap with the smoothing brush. It’s my favorite hair tool when I want to dry my hair with ease because you literally hold the brush in one hand and have one hand free to do whatever else with (drink water/coffee, relax, tidy up, etc.). As far as volume, I think if you learn to use the brush in an upwards motion, you’ll get just that. Sometimes I will dry my hair with the smoothing brush to eliminate frizz and then go back over the roots with the round brush to give it some lift. The hair dryer is amazing as well…you really can’t go wrong. So at the end of the day you’re deciding between the Airwrap with the brush (one tool) or using the hair dryer with a round/smoothing brush. Either will be great, the choice is really up to you RE budget and ease of use!
I’ve been on the fence about which one to get. This article really helped me make up my mind. The Air Wrap is not for me. I have thick course difficult hair past my shoulders and have no plans on cutting it. So going with the other one would be the best option for me. I just got an hombre and I take very good care of my hair. Can you please tell me what pre oil to use? Thank you so much for writing this article it really helped me a lot you’re a godsend!!
I’m so glad it helped you decide, Eileen! Totally agree that the hair dryer is the right choice for you. I actually took a break from the airwrap this summer because of the humidity (aka frizz!). I use the Oribe Gold Lust oil occasionally, but I haven’t found a pre-styling heat protectant that I absolutely love just yet. Thanks for reading! xo!
Thank you for this very thorough explanation. This was just the information I needed.
Aw, I’m so glad to hear that! Thanks for letting me know—glad it was helpful!
Hi Natalie! So glad I found your blog.
I recently purchased the supersonic since I have very thick hair and I was wondering if the air wrap attachment could go on my supersonic handle?
Thank you
Hi Etel! Unfortunately, the airwrap attachments only connect to the airwrap. I wish they made them that way—would be so convenient!
Hi Natalie, this is such great information, thank you for posting this review that popped up when was doing this research. Wondering if you can share which of these has a thinner handle? Weird question, I know, but I had surgery and my hand gets tired pretty easily so looking for a thin and light weight option. Thank you!
Hi Alyssa, so glad the review is helpful! That’s a great question. The airwrap has a thinner handle, but they are both very lightweight. The airwrap is technically lighter (1.1Lb vs 1.8lb on the hair dryer). I hope that helps!
I never read these types of articles or blogs bc I find them usually confusing or not honest. This was so well written, clear and made so much sense and answered all my questions. Thank you so much !
Hi Doris, your comment made my day! It’s really a joy for me to provide an honest take on products as I’ve also struggled to find authentic reviews of various products on the internet. I’m so glad you found it helpful! xo!
Thank you for this review. It helped me a lot.
I’m so glad to hear that Betty! Thank you for commenting to let me know!
Wow! Thank you so much for this review, it was extremely helpful. I have fine, gray wavy/ curly hair and I’ve been struggling with which tool to buy. Looks like it is the hair dryer. I was all set to buy the airwrap but I think the hairdryer is going to work best for my needs based on your fabulous review! Thank you again!
So glad you found the review helpful, Jennifer! I think you made the right choice. The supersonic hair dryer is awesome—hope you love it!
Cannot thank you enough for such an informative page on these two products! I’m now leaning towards buying both since I can’t decide on one, but at the same time I know I’ll break the bank by getting both! Thank you so much Natalie ❣️
I’m so glad to hear that, Ayesha! I hope that you love whichever one you chose!
Thank you, this has been most helpful for me! I bought the air wrap, and had no clue what or where to start with it! I didn’t know the difference between the two. Your information explained it perfectly and helped me feel more confident knowing what each attachment is used for and how to use them. I think I am going to check into a refurbished dryer for the convenience part . Thanks again! Well done.
I’m so glad to hear that, Sherri! Hope you love using your Dysons—they’re the best!
Thank you! Just ordered the airwrap but I think the supersonic is for me instead.
You’re so welcome! I hope the review was helpful and that you’re happy with whichever one you chose!
I’m torn between the two! They both have their pros and cons, but I think I’ll have to go with the Dyson Airwrap!
They’re both amazing! Let me know how the Airwrap works for you!
I’m torn between the two! They both have their pros and cons, but I think I’ll have to go with the Dyson Airwrap!
It’s truly so hard to decide between the two. Let me know how you like the Airwrap!
Hi Natalie! I really appreciate your thorough review, thank you for taking the time to write it! I am still struggling with which tool for my long, thick hair. I typically curl after drying. Any additional thoughts you can share? Thanks!
Hi Christa! I think if your hair is long and thick, you’ll be better off with the hair dryer to start. To be honest with you, I don’t find myself using the Airwrap too often lately as the dryer is just so incredibly fast and reliable. You really can’t go wrong with it—the quality is great and it saves so much time. I hope that helps!
