A Simple Formula for Styling Faux Fur

Now that fall is fully underway, my wardrobe naturally shifts to include more layers and rich textures, and that includes faux fur styles. I think there’s a misconception that faux fur reads too luxe or bougie for everyday wear, and while I’m a huge fan of using it in party looks, it can also feel relevant, cozy, and casual with the right styling.

For daytime, going all-out with faux fur isn’t my thing. Instead, I like to keep it simple by mixing elements that are a little feminine, a little bohemian, and a little classic. Here’s where I ended up with a recent faux fur outfit I wore for exploring Highlands, a quintessential town in the mountains of North Carolina where recently escaped for the weekend.

1. A Vest (In the Right Length)

As someone who has a long torso and shorter legs relative to my height, I prefer the illusion of length that a vest (sometimes called a gilet) that falls well below the waistline gives. I love that styles like this can be belted without cutting your body in half, too, which is a win for both party looks and laid back outfits.

My vest is old by La Fiorentina, but this is a similar vest from the brand, and I love this boxy style by Surell as well. I wear my vest so often once it gets chilly that I’ve been saving up my pennies for this hazelnut vest by Me+Em, too!

2. Classic Base Layers

Historically, I’m not a huge fan of black on black, but for October, I thought it’d be fun to give a feminine twist to an otherwise deep and eerie palette. I started with my favorite true black ankle jeans (not perfect for boots, but I wanted to pack light and they did the trick), classic leather boots (the quality and fit of these is excellent—they’re the perfect height, the zipper is smooth as butter, and they feel good walking around in for several hours), and my cozy vest. The mix of denim, leather, and faux fur keeps the black base from feeling flat.

3. A Feminine Touch

I ordered this Doen blouse from my fall wishlist about a month ago, and the print is gorgeous in person! It’s billowy cotton, making it perfect for sunny fall days with mild temperatures. Doen really knows how to do a moody floral (this print is also available as a dress that would be gorgeous for family photos). This blouse adds just the right of feminine against the black base!

4. A Soft Lip

Lastly, I added my favorite lip combination (this lip liner in ‘Wherever Walnut’ and this glowy lip color in ‘Rose Gold’) to soften the look even further. A dark red lip could be fun to try, though, as a way to lean into the vampy style of October!
