When shackets first came on the scene, the checked and plaid styles that were popular at the time were a little too casual and playful for my taste. But now that shirt jackets have become a fall wardrobe mainstay, there are dozens of iterations by different brands, so there’s a little something for every taste!
If your style leans feminine and polished like mine and you’re having trouble styling the shirt jacket, here’s an easy shacket outfit to recreate that blends practicality with personality. I also rounded up shackets that read more “elevated chic” and less “headed to the pumpkin patch” at the bottom of the post for you to shop.
How to Wear a Shacket
Reformation Shirt Jacket (TTS), Madewell Jeans (TTS), Everlane Turtleneck (S), Vanessa Bruno Hobo Bag (similar, less expensive here), Loeffler Randall Booties (size up 1/2)
Shackets are typically longer in length, making them perfect for wearing with leggings and denim. Because of this, most shirt jacket outfits lean toward the ultra casual side (think errands, Sunday brunch, etc.). If you’re looking for a shacket you can dress up and down, this cropped shirt jacket may be a great option for you. It’s gently oversized, allows room for layering, and is a perfect trans-seasonal weight for both chilly and cold days.
I went for a casual chic look and paired it with Madewell ’90s straight jeans and one of my favorite affordable layering tops. These jeans are incredible! The high rise, rigid feel, and leg width remind me of the SLVRLAKE Londons for less. I took my true size in standard (I’m 5’9″), which will work with flats, sneakers, heels, and boots. I’m wearing slim shaft booties by Loeffler Randall here.
The beauty of cropped layers like this is that you can also style them dresses, skirts in various lengths, and trousers without losing your shape. It’d look great with this feminine dress and dressy boots for Thanksgiving dinner! This shirt jacket is on the thicker side, which gives it some unique structure compared to traditional thin shackets.

Below, I rounded up a few more shirt jackets at high (over $150) and low (under $150) price points that I think perfectly balance style and practicality. You can click any of the products to shop.
Hi Natalie, what size of this jacket did you end up getting? Love it so much and hope you do another series for this upcoming fall.
Hi Lindsey! Of course—it’s a size S. And I’d love to do a similar post this fall! I’m very ready for cold weather. 🙂 The jacket is available in a few colors here https://rstyle.me/+Dl1PkMNbIIs4DPFwidTcKg
