Although we’re a good ways from chilly weather, my mind is on all things fall fashion. Pre-fall collections have landed and the rich colors, textures, and layers have me craving the seasonal shift. Nonetheless, I know more warm weather is in store, at least for a little while. If you’re daydreaming of cozy like me but can’t dress for it quite yet, one way to bridge the gap is by adding light sweaters to your transition shopping list.
The ideal lightweight knit sweater will keep you cool in heat and humidity but layer beautifully at the first sign of a chill. With that in mind, I did some digging and found 10 light sweaters for fall to inspire your between-season wardrobe. See below for the best knits to wear now (and later)!
10 Light Sweaters for Fall
If you get one light sweater for fall, let it be this cardigan. It’s one of my favorite transition pieces as the relaxed, oversized fit is ideal for travel, layering over sleeveless dresses in early fall, pairing with relaxed jeans, and more. It comes in four neutral colors. Be sure to size down!

Crochet Polo
This crochet-look polo is under $100, made from breathable cotton, and comes in four colors. Pair it with the matching skirt and a denim jacket for an early fall night out, with swim for a late summer vacation, or wear it with jeans and booties in true fall style. Lots of ways to style this beauty!
Shop NowThis pointelle knit by Club Monaco will have a luxurious feel thanks to the touch of silk in its construction. Lightweight and delicate, you’ll float from summer to fall in this one. Style it with transitional staples, from relaxed mid-wash jeans to a slip skirt or trendy trousers.
Shop NowOpen knit sweaters are perfect for summer to fall, with wide stitching to keep them breathable on balmy days that linger into September. This one by Reiss would look great with relaxed jeans or coordinating trousers. I’d wear a nude camisole underneath.
Shop NowAnother favorite transition piece in my wardrobe, this H&M rib-knit cardigan sweater has a cropped length that looks amazing with high-waisted jeans and dresses. Great for cool evenings over your favorite summer outfit and on its own in fall with denim and booties. More colors here.
Shop NowThis under $100 turtleneck sweater tank is one of those chameleon gems that will look just as great with joggers or leggings for fall travel as it will dressed up with high-waisted jeans, heels, and a belt. In four colors, the sage being my favorite, it’s begging to be worn now and layered underneath fall jackets and cardigans later.
Shop NowA shell might be simple, but this one checks all the boxes. Wear it alone on hot and humid days and layer under a cardigan as the weather begins to cool. If you want a fitted shell with a little more interest, I love the fringe detail on this one.
Shop NowWhen you’re craving the coziness of long sleeves but the heat hasn’t let up, this scalloped knit top is the answer. In four colors, this will look beautiful dressed up with a skirt or dressed down with denim. Either way, the scalloped trim adds that touch of interest that requires no complicated styling.
Shop NowI love an oversized sweater as much as the next girl, but fitted sweaters are one of the most overlooked early fall pieces. This streamlined boatneck sweater in cappuccino will look tuck into your favorite shorts, layer over a slip skirt, or pair with jeans, slingbacks, and a blazer for a night out. It also comes in a navy blue.
